Job Description:
The General Labourer I is an entry-level field position responsible for performing basic manual labour and site-support activities on infrastructure construction projects involving sewer, watermain, storm drainage, roadwork, and utility installations. This role supports the field crew by assisting with simple tasks, maintaining clean work areas, and following direction from supervisors.
The General Labourer I plays an important role in maintaining safe, organized, and productive work environments on Sierra job sites.
Key Responsibilities:

Perform general labour tasks (shoveling, sweeping, raking, moving materials) and support site preparation, trench cleanup, and ground activities.

Load/unload tools, materials, and equipment, and assist crew members with daily construction tasks across various work areas.

Follow all safety requirements including OHSA, Book 7, PPE use, and HSE policies; remain alert to hazards (excavation, utilities, equipment, traffic).

Report unsafe conditions immediately and participate in safety meetings, orientations, and toolbox talks.

Use and maintain basic hand tools and labour-level equipment (e.g., shovels, wheelbarrows, pumps), ensuring proper cleaning and storage.

Maintain clean, organized job sites through housekeeping, debris removal, and setting up safety barriers or traffic control when directed.

Support crews (pipe, road, civil) and equipment operators safely, while staging materials and preparing work areas.

Follow instructions, communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and complete any additional duties assigned in line with company policies.
Required Knowledge & Experience:

Prior construction experience is an asset but not required — training is provided.

Ability to use basic hand tools safely and effectively.

Strong work ethic and willingness to learn field construction tasks.

Basic understanding of construction safety practices.

Physically capable of lifting, bending, kneeling, and performing manual labour in varying conditions.

Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.

Safety certifications such as WHMIS, Book 7, or First Aid are assets.
