Replacement of existing aging timber bridge and the only access into Long Point, with a new 3 span 35m bridge over Big Creek’s outlet into the Long Point Inner Bay. The bridge replacement and causeway reconstruction occurred with precedent setting environmental controls as it is located within the Long Point World Biosphere Reserve. The project received the first approval of its kind from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to work within critical fish habitat. The landmark bridge replacement and causeway reconstruction also required approvals/coordination between Canadian Wildlife Services, the Long Point Region Conservation Authority, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry and Transport Canada. The bridge replacement required a two stage approach by first building half the new structure beside the existing bridge, opening a single lane of traffic over the new half, removing the old structure and then constructing the other half of the structure. Impressive project feats include completing structural foundation work 2 meters below Lake Erie water levels as well as the use of underwater divers to assist in the timber bridge removal.
