Job Description:

The Pipelayer is responsible for the safe and accurate installation of underground infrastructure including sewer, watermain, storm drainage, utility conduits, and associated structures. This role plays a critical hands-on function within Sierra’s civil construction crews and is essential to delivering high-quality municipal servicing and utility installations.
The Pipelayer works closely with the Foreperson, equipment operators, and labour teams to ensure correct alignment, grade, bedding, jointing, compaction, and installation of pipes and structures in accordance with drawings, specifications, and municipal standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install sewer, watermain, storm, and utility piping according to drawings, elevations, and specifications, ensuring proper line, grade, bedding, compaction, backfill, testing, flushing, and commissioning of installed systems.

  • Follow all OHSA, Book 7, confined space, and Sierra Construction safety policies by maintaining safe work practices in excavations, around heavy equipment and utilities, using proper PPE, trench protection, and reporting hazards immediately.

  • Interpret construction drawings, grades, and layout markings while measuring elevations and slopes using lasers, grade rods, and benchmarks to ensure accurate, watertight installations that meet DGSSMS and municipal requirements.

  • Work closely with equipment operators to guide excavation, maintain proper trench width and depth, direct bedding and compaction activities, and assist with trench preparation, cleanup, and site restoration.

  • Safely operate and maintain hand tools and pipe installation equipment, assist with rigging and hoisting of pipes and structures, and organize materials and work areas to support efficient installation.

  • Communicate effectively with the Foreperson, operators, labourers, and supervisors by providing updates on grades, materials, installation progress, unforeseen site conditions, and drawing conflicts.

  • Assist with general labour duties, site housekeeping, material movement, setup, cleanup, and other field operations to support overall project success.

  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures while performing additional duties assigned by the Foreperson, Superintendent, or leadership as required.

Required Knowledge & Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience installing sewer, watermain, storm, or utility piping in civil/infrastructure construction.

  • Strong knowledge of pipe installation methods, trench safety, and municipal servicing standards.

  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, grades, and layout markings.

  • Skilled in using laser levels, grade rods, and layout tools for accurate alignment and grade control.

  • Experience working safely in trenches and around heavy equipment.

  • Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Relevant safety certifications (confined space, trenching, WHMIS, First Aid) are assets.
