Job Description:
The Equipment Operator II is a skilled operator responsible for safely and effectively performing basic to moderate excavation, material handling, grading, and site-support tasks on infrastructure projects involving sewer, watermain, road, and utility construction. This role requires solid equipment competency, safe work habits, and the ability to work closely under direction from Forepersons and Superintendents.
Equipment Operator II personnel typically handle standard excavation and earthworks tasks, supporting pipe crews, road crews, and general civil work.
Key Responsibilities:

Safely operate assigned heavy civil equipment, including skid steers, small- to mid-size excavators, backhoes, loaders, and compact equipment, to perform excavation, trenching, backfilling, loading, stockpiling, rough grading, site preparation, earthworks, and pipe installation support.

Follow all OHSA regulations, Book 7 requirements, and Sierra Construction safety policies by completing daily pre-operation inspections, maintaining safe operating distances, using required PPE, utilizing spotters when necessary, and reporting unsafe conditions or equipment concerns.

Operate equipment safely around active crews by maintaining clear visual and radio communication, adjusting operations to changing site conditions, and following the daily work plan provided by the Foreperson or Superintendent.

Perform basic excavation and grading to required depths and slopes by accurately following layout markings, grade stakes, and instructions while protecting utilities, installed infrastructure, and adjacent structures.

Support installation crews by preparing trenches, subgrade areas, and work zones, staging materials, moving equipment, and maintaining safe, organized job sites that promote efficient production.

Perform routine equipment maintenance, including daily inspections, fueling, greasing, cleaning, and identifying mechanical issues early to minimize downtime and prevent unnecessary wear.

Work collaboratively with labourers, pipe layers, and other equipment operators by communicating movements, hazards, and equipment needs while following instructions to support safe and efficient field operations.

Assist with general labour duties, traffic control, material organization, site housekeeping, and other responsibilities assigned by the Superintendent or Working Foreperson while adhering to all company policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge & Experience:

1–4 years of experience operating heavy civil equipment in infrastructure or construction environments.

Competent operation of small–mid size excavators, skid steers, backhoes, loaders, or equivalent equipment.

Understanding of excavation safety, trenching practices, and working around underground utilities.

Ability to interpret layout markings, basic grades, and direction from site leadership.

Reliable, safety-focused, and able to operate under supervision.

Valid operator tickets/certifications as required.

Valid Ontario driver’s license and reliable transportation.
